FINCA LOS HOYALES 2016 OBTAINS 97 POINTS AND A PLATINUM MEDAL AT THE DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS
Finca Los Hoyales 2016 has just achieved its most important recognition to date. The Cruz de Alba winery’s most iconic wine obtained 97 points in the 2022 edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the most important and prestigious international competitions, simultaneously receiving the Platinum Medal accrediting it as one of the best wines in the world. This very important award places this unique wine, produced in the Ribera del Duero's MIlla de Oro, on the map of national and international enological excellence.
This is not the first major relevant award to have been received by Finca Los Hoyales, which since its first vintage (2012) has been collecting important awards and high scores from the most renowned national and international critics.
Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros stated in a recent report that “this wine is amazingly dense but smooth. It has chewy and seductive sweet tannins, tertiary notes of coffee and dried beans on the finish. It illustrates great winemaking rather than a particular origin, and is new gem among the range of outstanding wines from Rioja and Rías Baixas. A textbook Ribera, modern and high-end”.
Over 18,000 wines from 54 countries were tasted at the 2022 edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards. More than 250 judges made up the panel of experts, including 41 Masters of Wine, 13 Master Sommeliers, and dozens of journalists and specialized critics of various nationalities.
Sourced from a micro-plot of 1.8 hectares on the oldest part of the vineyard, Finca Los Hoyales comes from vines almost 70 years old at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level, in very poor, sandy soils. Harvested by hand with the selection of clusters in the vineyard, the grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in 500-liter oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new 500-liter French oak barrels.
The wine then remains in the same barrel, ageing on its lees for 22 months without racking, only gentle stirring from time to time. Bottled unfiltered, it is left to settle for 10 months before being released for sale.
