SERGIO ÁVILA, NAMED “VITICULTURIST OF THE YEAR” BY TIM ATKIN IN HIS RIBERA DEL DUERO REPORT 2025
Sergio Ávila, winemaker at Cruz de Alba, has been recognized by Master of Wine Tim Atkin as “Viticulturist of the Year” in his highly anticipated Ribera del Duero 2025 annual report, thus consolidating his role as a benchmark of biodynamic viticulture in the Denomination of Origin. Of Sergio, Tim Atkin highlights that he is “a man who thinks, breathes, and lives biodynamics,” emphasizing his exceptional connection with nature and the vineyard. He adds, “I’ve met many viticulturists in my 40 years writing about wine, but very few with the same connection to their vines.” The report also underscores Ávila’s profound sensitivity toward the soil and the environment.

“I learned about soil balance, the different clones and massal selections, about how vineyards respond to underground streams. Above all, it was an enriching experience.” Atkin defines him as “the leading exponent of biodynamics in the region,” highlighting his philosophy: “Sergio Ávila, from Cruz de Alba, says that ‘terroir is an expression of the vitality of the soil,’ and it’s hard to disagree after spending a few hours walking with him through his vineyards.” This distinction recognizes not only Ávila’s technical excellence, but also his commitment to respectful viticulture, where soil energy and biodiversity pave the way toward “wines of identity and balance,” he adds.
